We live in a world tangled in appearances—appearances of conflict, fear, suffering, division, and limitation. Yet woven through the tapestry of both Scripture and A Course in Miracles (ACIM) is a radiant thread of promise: the truth shall set you free. But what is this truth? And what is the freedom it offers?
In the Gospel of John, Jesus tells His followers: “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32, KJV). He is not referring to facts, doctrines, or dogmas, but to a deep, inner knowing—a recognition of our divine origin, our oneness with God, and the illusion of separation that binds us. This verse is not just a reassurance; it is an invitation to awaken.
A Course in Miracles echoes this with striking clarity. It teaches that “Truth is true, and nothing else is true” (Lesson 152), and that we are not victims of the world we see. The Course asserts that the world is a projection of our mistaken thoughts—built upon the ego’s central premise that we are separate from God and one another. And yet, it insists, none of this is real. In Workbook Lesson 132, we are reminded: “There is no world! This is the central thought the course attempts to teach.”
Freedom, then, does not come by changing the external world or escaping it—it comes by recognizing it for what it is: a dream. Not a dream given by God, but one constructed by the ego to keep us imprisoned in guilt, judgment, and fear. As the Course teaches, “The truth is that you are not a body” (Lesson 199), and “your mind is part of God’s. You are very holy” (Lesson 35). This is the truth that sets us free—not later, not after death, but now.
To the ego, this truth is threatening. The ego thrives on conflict and identity, needing to be “right” and fearing loss. But to the Holy Spirit, who speaks for truth, salvation lies in relinquishing every illusion we’ve made, including the belief that we are alone, guilty, or unworthy. As Jesus tells us in the Course, “You are at home in God, dreaming of exile.” The truth is not something we earn or achieve. It is something we remember.
The idea of truth as liberation is deeply spiritual but also deeply practical. When we accept the truth of our shared innocence, we stop projecting guilt onto others. We forgive—not because others deserve it, but because we do. As the Course says, “Forgiveness is the key to happiness.” Every time we release a grievance, we loosen the chains we put on ourselves.
The freedom offered by truth is not simply the absence of suffering; it is the presence of peace. It is the quiet joy of knowing that nothing real can be threatened, and nothing unreal exists (T-In.2:2-3). It is the end of striving, the lifting of burdens, the realization that we are as God created us.
This truth does not fluctuate with opinion, emotion, or experience. It stands as steady and eternal as the love of God. Scripture affirms, “God is love” (1 John 4:8), and the Course clarifies: “Love is the way I walk in gratitude” (Lesson 195). Love, truth, freedom—they are all facets of the same eternal reality. To know the truth is to know God, not as a distant deity but as the very essence of our being.
And so, the path to freedom is not through resistance, control, or knowledge in the worldly sense. It is through unlearning what is false. As we surrender each illusion—of victimhood, guilt, attack, lack, and fear—we make room for the truth to return to our awareness.
You may not feel this freedom every moment. But even in doubt or darkness, the truth remains unchanged, waiting patiently for your willingness. As ACIM reassures us: “When you have learned how to decide with God, all decisions become as easy and as right as breathing” (T-14.IV.6:1). There is nothing to fear in the truth. Only peace, only joy, only love.
So let us pause today and remember: truth is not hidden. It is not far. It is already within us, waiting to be claimed. And when we remember who we truly are—spirit, whole, innocent, and eternal—we will know what Jesus meant when he promised, “The truth shall set you free.”
