There are realities in our lives that defy direct perception. The wind cannot be seen, yet its power is undeniable—rustling leaves, moving oceans, shifting landscapes. Love, too, is unseen, yet its effects echo in every act of kindness, every moment of forgiveness, every whisper of peace. Both wind and love remind us that what is invisible to the eye may be most essential to the heart.
A Course in Miracles invites us to consider love as the fundamental reality, not because we can see it, but because we can experience its effect. The Course states: “Love is the only reality, and it is beyond what can be defined” (T-13.V.3:3). Just as no one questions the existence of wind when they feel it sweep across their skin, no one can deny the presence of love when it fills a room, softens a voice, or dissolves fear.
Love as the Unseen Reality
The Course tells us: “God is but Love, and therefore so am I” (W-pII.171-180). Love is our very essence, yet our eyes are not built to see it. Instead, we recognize love in its reflections—gentleness, patience, forgiveness, and peace. Much like the wind’s effect on a sailboat, unseen love can alter the course of our lives. The Course reminds us: “Teach only love, for that is what you are” (T-6.I.13:2). This teaching suggests that love’s impact is not abstract—it moves through us into form, into words and actions, much as the wind finds expression in the movement of trees and waves.
Fear as the Illusion of Still Air
The Course contrasts love with fear, yet teaches that fear is an illusion. “Perfect love casts out fear. If fear exists, then there is not perfect love. But only perfect love exists” (T-1.VI.5:4-7). To believe in fear is like believing the air is still when in truth the wind is always present. The absence of awareness is not the absence of reality. Love, like the wind, is constant, even when our perception fails to register it.
Experiencing Love Through Forgiveness
If we cannot see love, how then do we know it is there? The Course answers: through forgiveness. “Forgiveness is the means by which we will remember. Through forgiveness the thinking of the world is reversed. The forgiven world becomes the gate of Heaven” (W-pII.Int.3:1-3). Each act of release—of letting go of grievance—becomes the trembling leaf that reveals the invisible breeze of love.
From Perception to Knowledge
We may not perceive love with the body’s eyes, but we can experience it through a shift in mind. “Perception is a mirror, not a fact. What I look on is my state of mind, reflected outward” (W-pII.304.1:3-4). Just as wind is not the rustling of leaves but the force behind them, love is not the form of kindness but the eternal Source that motivates it. To know love is to know God, for “God is Love, and in His Being I live and move and have my being” (T-24.in.1:8).
Closing Reflection
Like the wind, love is not bound by sight. It cannot be captured or defined, only recognized in its effects. The Course teaches that all else—fear, guilt, anger—is illusion, fleeting clouds that obscure but cannot extinguish the ever-present current of love. To open ourselves to forgiveness is to feel the breeze of Spirit across our lives, reminding us that we are carried, not by what is seen, but by what is real.
