One of the most radical and comforting statements in A Course in Miracles appears in Lesson 101 of the Workbook:
“God’s Will for you is perfect happiness.”
At first glance, this may seem hard to believe. How can perfect happiness be God’s Will in a world so full of conflict, loss, and suffering? Yet this lesson invites us to question everything we think we know about happiness, God, and ourselves.
Let’s explore this statement by asking three essential questions:
What is perfect happiness? According to whom? And how is it manifested?
What Is “Perfect Happiness”?
In the world’s eyes, happiness often depends on external circumstances: health, relationships, success, or comfort. It is fleeting, conditional, and vulnerable to loss. But in A Course in Miracles, perfect happiness is not tied to anything the body perceives or the ego values. It is a lasting inner peace that comes from remembering who we are in Truth.
“Happiness is an attribute of love. It cannot be apart from it. Nor can it be experienced where love is not.”
(W-pI.102.1:1-3)
In this light, happiness is not a reward for right behavior nor a byproduct of accomplishment. It is our natural inheritance as creations of God. It is the quiet joy that arises when the mind is no longer in conflict with itself—when it remembers love, and chooses love.
This perfect happiness is not something we must earn. It is already within us, waiting to be uncovered by the release of guilt, fear, and judgment. It is not pleasure or excitement, but a deep and unwavering peace. It is the experience of safety and wholeness, free from attack and lack.
According to Whom?
This version of happiness—perfect, unconditional, and eternal—is not defined by the world, the ego, or even our personal preferences. It is God’s definition, communicated to us by the Holy Spirit and reflected in our right mind.
“God’s Will is that His Son be One, and united with Him in His Oneness.”
(T-8.IX.7:6)
God’s Will is not mysterious or punishing. It is not full of trials or lessons imposed from above. Rather, it is the simple truth that love cannot oppose itself, and so we were created to dwell in joy, peace, and unity.
The ego would have us believe that God’s Will involves sacrifice, suffering, or submission. But A Course in Miracles corrects this error. God’s Will for us is not pain, and never has been.
“Pain is not a prerequisite for anything except the ego’s goals.”
(T-8.VIII.1:1)
How Is Perfect Happiness Manifested?
If this happiness is God’s Will, why don’t we always experience it?
The Course teaches that the only reason we do not feel this joy is because we have chosen against it—not consciously, but through our identification with the ego. We have chosen to believe in separation, guilt, and judgment. And in doing so, we have blocked awareness of the peace already within us.
The way back is not through trying harder or fixing the world. It is through forgiveness—letting go of our judgments and seeing with the eyes of Christ.
“Forgiveness is the key to happiness.”
(W-121.Heading)
Forgiveness removes the barriers to love. It restores our awareness of unity. As we forgive, we begin to see differently. And in seeing differently, we feel differently. The fear subsides, the heart softens, and joy quietly returns.
This is not magic, nor is it a technique. It is a shift in perception. It is the miracle.
“If you knew Who walks beside you on the way that you have chosen, fear would be impossible.”
(T-18.III.3:2)
To manifest perfect happiness, then, is not to change the world, but to change our mind about the world. It is to remember that nothing real can be threatened, and nothing unreal exists. This is the foundation of peace.
Undoing the Ego’s Substitutes
The ego substitutes temporary highs for eternal peace. It tells us happiness lies in status, control, revenge, or material gain. But these only increase our sense of separation and fear.
“You think you are the home of evil, darkness and sin… Yet you are as God created you. In you is all of Heaven.”
(W-93.1:1–7)
When we begin to question these ego lies and open our hearts to the truth, something shifts. A gentle light dawns. We remember what we are. And in that remembrance, perfect happiness arises naturally.
In Conclusion
Perfect happiness is not a fantasy or an unreachable ideal. It is God’s Will for us. It is not something to be earned, but something to be accepted. It comes not from striving, but from surrendering our illusions.
“There is no cruelty in God and none in me.”
(W-170.6:1)
To believe this is to begin the journey back to peace. Each time we choose love over fear, forgiveness over judgment, or truth over illusion, we step closer to that happiness which cannot fade.
You were created in joy. You were created for joy. And joy is your natural state.
