Beyond the Headlines: Finding Peace in a World That Feels Unsafe How A Course in Miracles Offers Hope When Political Uncertainty and Fear Threaten Your Peace
As a senior citizen living in a state of near-constant flux, I’ve grown accustomed to hearing political rhetoric threaten the future of Social Security, Medicare, and other hard-earned benefits that many of us depend on for daily survival. With each election cycle or policy shift, the stability we once assumed seems to tremble beneath our feet.
It’s not just about money. It’s about security. It’s about knowing that after a lifetime of work, contribution, and sacrifice, something is there to support us. And when that foundation feels shaky, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by fear, worry, and yes—depression.
Let’s say this plainly: depression under these circumstances is understandable—but it is not mandatory.
The anxiety and sadness that arise in response to these threats are deeply human. But A Course in Miracles gently reminds us that these are not threats to who you truly are. They are threats only to the ego’s version of the world—a version built on fear, competition, loss, and bodily identity.
“The world is false perception. It is born of error, and it has not left its source.” (W-pII.3.1:1-2)
When Medicare or Social Security is at risk, it may feel like your very existence is in danger. But this is only true if we’ve confused our existence with the body or the systems that support it. The real you—the Self created by God—is untouched by these changes. The world can shake, but Truth remains unmoved.
“You are not a body. You are free. For you are still as God created you.” (W-pI.199.8:7–9)
This is not a call to spiritual detachment or indifference. It is an invitation to reclaim your identity from the illusion and return it to Love.
A Deeper Look: What Is Depression, Really?
According to A Course in Miracles, depression results not from external events themselves, but from believing in a version of reality that is disconnected from our Source. It arises when we feel deprived, threatened, or abandoned—but those are ego conclusions, not divine facts.
“Depression is an inevitable consequence of separation.” (T-8.VII.4:3)
And what have we separated from? Not a government program, but our awareness of the eternal Love that created and sustains us.
“The ego is the part of the mind that believes in division.” (T-5.V.3:1)
“What is the ego? But a dream of what you really are.” (C-2.1:4)
The Shift: From Fear to Trust
Rather than battling every headline or policy shift, ACIM invites us to shift internally—from fear to trust, from ego to Spirit, from illusion to truth.
“If you knew Who walks beside you on the way that you have chosen, fear would be impossible.” (T-18.III.3:2)
You are not walking this uncertain road alone. And the One who walks with you cannot be shaken.
Depression as a Call for Love
The Course redefines depression as a mistaken cry for love. Not a failure—but a moment of forgetfulness.
“All things are lessons God would have me learn.” (W-pI.193)
“Every decision you make stems from what you think you are, and represents the value that you put upon yourself.” (T-15.III.3:4)
The next time you feel low, anxious, or hopeless, consider the possibility that what you’re truly feeling is the discomfort of false identification—and that a shift in perception is just one thought away.
Practical Peace in an Unstable World
So what do we do when the news is bad, the systems feel fragile, and age itself adds another layer of vulnerability?
We breathe.
We remember.
We ask for help—not from politicians, but from the Holy Spirit within.
“The peace of God is shining in you now.” (W-pI.188.1:1)
“Now is the only time there is.” (T-13.IV.7:1)
These are not empty affirmations. They are truths that pierce illusion and restore peace—not to the world, but to your mind.
A Final Word to Fellow Seniors
You are not past your prime. You are not obsolete. And you are not defined by your fears.
Yes, the depression you feel may be understandable. But it is not required. It is a passing shadow on a bright and holy light that still shines in you.
The world may tremble. Systems may fail. But you, as God created you, remain untouched, eternal, and worthy of peace.
“Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.” (T-in.2:2–4)
Choose again. Choose Love. Choose truth. And let peace return.
