“Miracles are natural. When they do not occur, something has gone wrong.”
A Course in Miracles

This deceptively simple statement has stopped many readers in their tracks. If miracles are natural—if they are meant to be the norm, not the exception—why do they seem so rare? And what does it mean when the Course says that “something has gone wrong”?

To explore this, we must first let go of the idea that miracles are supernatural spectacles or dramatic interventions that suspend the laws of nature. From the perspective of A Course in Miracles (ACIM), a miracle is a shift in perception—a correction in the mind from fear to love, from illusion to truth. And from the teachings of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, we learn that spiritual healing is not a magical event but a natural result of aligning thought with divine Principle.

In other words, miracles don’t violate natural laws. They reveal the deeper, spiritual laws that govern all life.

What Is a Miracle?

In the language of ACIM, a miracle is an act of love. It is an effect of choosing the guidance of the Holy Spirit over the judgment of the ego. It does not fix something “out there” but reorders perception in a way that reflects truth, harmony, and divine connection.

Mary Baker Eddy would likely agree, though she uses different terms. She describes healing not as God stepping in to override the natural order, but as the unveiling of what has always been true in divine Mind. She writes, “Miracles are impossible in Science, and here, the highest understanding of God excludes the possibility of such phenomena.” And yet she devoted her life to the healing power of Spirit, showing that what appears miraculous from a material point of view is simply normal when seen through spiritual understanding.

In both teachings, the miraculous is not abnormal—it’s what happens when the mind comes into harmony with spiritual reality.

Why Do Miracles Seem So Rare?

If miracles are our natural state, why don’t we experience them more often?

The answer, again, lies in perception. Something has “gone wrong” not in reality, but in our awareness. We have chosen to see through the eyes of the ego—eyes that are trained to perceive conflict, lack, and separation. From this distorted perception, the miraculous seems foreign, impossible, or at best, reserved for saints and mystics.

But the truth is much more generous: miracles are available to everyone. They are not earned. They are not given only to the “worthy.” They are the natural inheritance of every child of the Infinite.

If the word “God” doesn’t resonate for you, substitute what feels truest in your own heart—Spirit, Love, The Universe, The Infinite, or simply the Greater Presence. What matters is not the label, but the relationship: an awareness of something vast, loving, intelligent, and whole that moves through you and all things.

Miracles occur when we remember this relationship, however briefly. They require only a willingness to let go of the fearful thought in favor of a loving one.

Miracles Are Shifts in Thought

One of the most freeing ideas from both ACIM and Science and Health is that the cause of healing is always mental—not material. This is not about denying the reality of human pain but about recognizing that our inner world holds the power to reshape our outer experience.

A miracle might look like a physical healing. But it may also take the form of a sudden peace in the middle of chaos, a reconciliation after years of conflict, or a release from long-held guilt. These are no less miraculous because they are inward.

What matters is the shift from fear to love. That shift, however small, moves mountains.

Eddy describes this process as the elevation of thought above false belief. “The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love.” This “unselfed love” is the key. The more we forget the small, anxious self and align with the wholeness of Spirit, the more natural miracles become.

Creating the Conditions for Miracles

You do not need to force a miracle. You do not need to prove yourself worthy of one. You simply need to create the conditions where they can occur—and that condition is a quiet, willing mind.

This is why prayer, meditation, and inner stillness are so powerful. They are not attempts to manipulate the world but to step back and allow divine truth to be revealed. In this state, the “laws” of limitation no longer apply, and what once seemed impossible becomes obvious.

This is not passivity—it is powerful participation in divine order. When you become still enough to hear the guidance of Spirit, miracles naturally follow. They are the inevitable outcome of correct thought aligned with truth.

Living a Miraculous Life

Miracles are not meant to be rare. They are not meant to be hoarded or idolized. They are meant to be shared. Every time you choose love over fear, forgiveness over judgment, or peace over attack, you become a living invitation to the miraculous.

This is not always dramatic. In fact, it is often quiet, ordinary, and invisible to the world. But make no mistake—each of these shifts contributes to the healing of the whole.

You are not separate from the Source of miracles. You are a miracle. Your very existence is evidence of love expressing itself through form. And when you remember that, even for a moment, you awaken others simply by your presence.

Final Thought

The truth is, nothing real can be threatened, and nothing unreal exists. In this understanding lies the peace of God—and in that peace, miracles abound.

Let go of trying to control outcomes. Let go of trying to make things happen. Trust the wisdom of the greater Presence that knows your heart and holds all things together. Miracles are not signs of divine favoritism; they are the natural result of alignment with truth.

The more we align with that truth, the more we recognize: miracles are not the exception. They are the rule.
